Reading Time: 2 minutesThree weeks ago, I stood in the middle of the packed Sherman Middle School gymnasium in Madison as hundreds of President Joe Biden’s most passionate supporters’ cheers rang throughout the campaign stop. Confined to a small press area, I watched as people passed “Let’s Go Joe” signs between one another while exuberantly chanting “four more years,” just 16 days before the sitting president dropped out of the race. Last week, I walked among red, white and blue-spangled crowds with thousands of former President Donald Trump’s biggest supporters filling out Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum at the Republican National Convention. Multicolored “Make America Great Again” hats rippled like a sea across the arena, and the former president raised his fist again, chanting, “fight, fight, fight.” Each candidate echoed his case within chambers of their own creation, offering explanations for why people in Wisconsin should cast their ballot in each candidate’s direction. But I was left wondering how voters across this diverse state are really feeling. Some may look at polling data to glean the intentions of Wisconsin voters, but doing so tells only a sliver of the story. Whether or not you’re an avid supporter of a presidential candidate, we want to hear about what issues matter most to you. In my experience working as a photojournalist, the most interesting and intimate stories don’t come from crowds, they come from individuals living their daily lives. As we approach the November election, and as you decide who will earn your vote in national, state and local races, I’m interested in tagging along to photograph a day in your life. In this new project, I want to hear your perspectives and document how key issues impact your life, whether it’s health care, housing, criminal justice, transportation or something else. Through photographic reporting and audio interviews, we hope to hold our elected officials accountable by showing them who their policies affect across the state of Wisconsin. If you’re interested in participating, please fill out this Google Form or reach out to me directly at jtimmerman@wisconsinwatch.org.
