ITHACA, N.Y. — It will be feeling a lot like spring during the week ahead – and not “mud season” that kicks off early spring, but temperatures we’d be more likely to see in mid-April than mid-March. In fact, temperatures will be pushing close to 70 a few days this week. Dry conditions are expected, which this time of the year is a mixed blessing, as New York’s fire season is typically in the spring before leaf-out, and mild, dry conditions won’t do that any favors (as Long Island is already well-aware). But at least weather-wise, no major disturbances are expected, at least until next weekend potentially.Good morning all. Here is a look at the week ahead for Central NY & Northeast PA. This fast-moving system has little moisture available to it, and the primary impact will be stronger northwest winds during the day – winds rotate counterclockwise around lows and clockwise around highs in the Northern Hemisphere, so if you picture them as gears turning, we’re in the right spot for amplified winds from the northwest.For the rest of your Sunday, expect partly to mostly cloudy skies, generally sunnier in the late afternoon, with some breezy northwest winds that will have some embedded wind gusts in the 25-30 MPH range. Highs will be in the mid 40s. Tonight will see winds calm and become light out of the south as the clipper low heads east and the dominant flow becomes southwesterly due to larger if still distant storm systems over the Great Plains and Western Great Lakes. It will be mostly cloudy and dry with lows in the mid 30s.With the developing southwest flow, Monday will be a milder and rather pleasant day for March, Partly cloudy skies will become mostly sunny by afternoon, with highs in the upper 50s. Monday night will host mostly clear skies with lows around 40.Stronger southwest flow develops for Tuesday as the Canadian low passes to the north. Temperatures will spike into the mid to upper 60s with increasing clouds. The low should pass Ithaca’s longitude well to the north around sunset, and with a high behind (west of) the low, that will cause winds to become northwesterly and usher in colder air overnight. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy if dry, with lows in the upper 20s.Wednesday is a cooler day as that high pressure moves in from the west. Skies will be partly cloudy with seasonable highs in the mid 40s. Wednesday night may see an isolated lake-enhanced rain shower or two, with mostly cloudy skies and lows in the mid 30s.On the backside of the high Thursday, milder air returns. A few morning showers give way to partly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 50s. Thursday night will be partly cloudy with lows around 40.Friday will be an even warmer day. A few models do suggest some pre-frontal rain may develop, but the current consensus is a dry day with partly cloudy skies and highs in the mid to upper 60s. Friday night is expected to be mostly cloudy and dry with mild overnight lows around 50.Looking into next weekend, a very strong storm system appears to be winding up over the Great Plains and Midwest. Ahead of that, strong southerly flow and moisture will result in a cloudier day with some rain showers possible, but temps remain above normal, in the mid 60s, and lows Saturday night in the mid 50s. Sunday is likely to see a strong cold front move through, however, and while highs will be in the mid 60s, windy and rainy conditions appear likely. There’s some potential for disruptive weather here, so next Sunday will need to be monitored over the coming days.Graphics courtesy of the NOAA Climate Prediction Center.Extended OutlookThe second half of March is looking likely to be on the warm and wet side for the Northeast. The large-scale pattern would see a jet stream ridge over the Eastern U.S., and an upstream trough over the West Coast. While this pattern is favorable for milder-than-normal air to kick off astronomical spring, it would also channel moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and the coastal Atlantic across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast states.
