Temperatures will be on the mild side for the end of February, but it will be grey and showery for most of the week. High pressure sits to the south, so Downstate and most of Pennsylvania are enjoying brighter, sunnier conditions. There are some light snow showers across Central and Northern New York this morning, but Tompkins County, further to the south, is only getting clipped with a few light fringe snow showers. As that trough moves by to the north, skies will remain cloudy today, with a few flurries and highs in the mid 30s. Sunday night will see mostly cloudy skies and lows in the low 20s.High pressure will remain centered over the Mid-Atlantic Coast for Monday, which will be welcome for us for two reasons. For one, that clockwise flow around the core of the high will bring milder southern air into Tompkins County. For two, a second, stronger frontal trough will be trekking eastward across Canada Monday night, but that high will help deflect the bulk of the precip shield, like a rock in the middle of a flowing stream. Monday will see mostly cloudy skies and a south breeze with highs in the mid 40s. Monday night will see some light rain showers (<0.10″ total) from the trough. With mild overnight lows in the mid 30s, temperatures should stay high enough to keep it rain showers through the night.Tuesday will see a weak shortwave wrapped into the flow of the frontal trough and further pushed northeastward by the rear flank of the high, so it will be cloudy with scattered rain showers, but temperatures will once again be mild on those south winds, in the mid 40s for Ithaca and its environs. Tuesday night will see showers end with cloudy skies and lows in the lower 30s.Wednesday will offer some brief meteorological respite before a weak clipper low approaches from the west Wednesday night. Wednesday will be mostly cloudy and dry with highs in the upper 40s. Wednesday night will see rain showers with lows in the mid to upper 30s. Will note that at this point, rainfall Wednesday night appears light.The clipper low will move northeastward up the St. Lawrence Valley and become better organized Thursday, which will begin to pull in some colder air on the rear flank of its counterclockwise circulation. It will be cloudy with rain showers during the day and highs in the lower 40s. Thursday night will see rain showers becoming snow showers, though accumulation will be little if any. Lows will be in the upper 20s.Friday will be quiet as a high pressure system presses in from the northwest, though its influence will be undercut by yet another clipper low coming in from the Midwest Friday night into Saturday. Friday will be dry with more clouds than sun, and highs in the mid 30s. Friday night will be mostly cloudy with snow showers approaching around sunrise Saturday. Lows will be in the mid 20s.Peering into next weekend, that clipper low will move through Saturday, with snow showers changing over to rain showers after sunrise. Highs will be around 40. Showers change back over to snow showers Saturday night as the system moves out to the east, with lows around 20. It does look like a brief cold snap will move in for Sunday, though it should quickly moderate by next Monday and Tuesday. Sunday looks to be partly cloudy and dry with highs only in the mid 20s, and mid teens Sunday night.Extended OutlookGraphics courtesy of the NOAA Climate Prediction Center.For the start of March and meteorological spring (March-April-May), it’s looking like a neutral-to-cold pattern over most of the lower 48, with colder-than-normal conditions likely over the Northeast. It might come as some surprise that the second week of March (6th-13th) is typically the one most likely to see a major snowstorm event for the Northeast, but looking at the large-scale conditions heading into early March, the broadly unstable pattern diffuses that energy out over much of the continental United States, so it’s hard to concentrate that unstable energy to make for a major snowmaker. Not impossible, but the early indicators for any big March storms are a mixed bag.
