TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. — The West Danby Water District has issued a likely three-day boil water notice after a water main break caused a loss of pressure in the system Wednesday night, according to a statement from the Town of Danby.Customers of the West Danby Water District should plan to boil any water used for drinking, food preparation, baby formula, manual dish washing and tooth brushing until further notice from the water district. Officials also advised customers not to rely on home water filters because they do not remove bacteria.Crews are still searching for the location of the water main break. When a water system loses pressure, there’s a heightened risk of untreated water and harmful bacteria entering people’s taps. “We are working closely with the operators [of the water district] to make sure residents are aware and taking precautions,” said Public Health Engineer for Tompkins County Whole Health, Scott Freyburger. “Customers will be notified when the tests show that they no longer need to boil water.”To safely boil water, residents should bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute, then turn off the heat and let the water cool before storing it in a clean, covered container. West Danby Water District customers can still take showers, do laundry and run the dishwasher on high temperatures. Drinking contaminated water can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea and headaches. Additional risks are possible for infants, elderly and immunocompromised people. Customers can request bottled water be delivered to them at no cost by calling or texting the water district clerk at 607-319-6166.Once the order is lifted, customers should run all taps for five minutes on cold to flush out any contaminated water.
