ITHACA, N.Y. — Cayuga Medical Center has begun admitting new patients again after a potential cyberattack Tuesday evening. The attack disrupted a wide swath of the hospital’s computer systems, which prompted the hospital to pause emergency room admissions and re-route ambulances to other hospitals as part of a temporary diversion order. The diversion order was called around 8 p.m. and lasted until about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday night. As of 11:30 p.m., CMC spokesperson Melissa Tourtellotte said the hospital was in “recovery mode” — while new patients could be admitted to the emergency room and ambulances were no longer being re-routed, some of the hospital’s systems were still offline. “There was an attempted cyber attack earlier [Tuesday] evening,” Tourtellotte said. “We isolated systems as we assessed the situation. […] We are in recovery now and all systems are expected to be back online later [Tuesday] night.”Tourtellotte said patients suffering strokes or a STEMI incident, which stands for ST-elevation myocardial infarction or a heart attack, were diverted because that is required by the state during an outage of this nature. The nature of the cyberattack, or its motives, was not clear Tuesday night. Police scanner archives show that an ambulance was en route to the hospital as the diversion order was issued. The ambulance’s crew were then redirected to a facility in Cortland. Patients in the emergency waiting room at the hospital at the time of the outage described a frenetic scene, with staff resorting to pencil-and-paper to check in new patients. One person said several patients had tired of waiting and ended up leaving the waiting room before being admitted.
