ITHACA, N.Y. — The annual International Rutabaga Curl, a tradition unlike any other, took place on Saturday at the Ithaca Farmers Market, marking its 27th year of celebrating winter and root vegetables.

Crowds of local residents gathered under the market’s pavilion to watch the annual rutabaga curl and the preceding turnip toss, featuring local youths. Incoming U.S. House of Representatives member Josh Riley provided the ceremonial first toss.

Henry Tompkins of Team Coverfield Bridge was crowned this year’s champion, followed by teammate JT Tompkins in second place and Michael Vega in third place. Catherine Dickenson won best-decorated rutabaga for her “grogutabaga.”
