Buffalo Street Books, a cooperatively owned Ithaca bookstore, plans to transition to nonprofit status to address financial difficulties exacerbated by declining sales. The move aims to secure grant funding and align with its community-focused mission.

The store has raised $55,000 of its $100,000 year-end goal through fundraising efforts, including memberships and events. The change could also offer new opportunities, such as employing work-study students.
