(APN) — Governor Kathy Hochul announced the availability of $22 million in funding for projects to modernize and enhance the resilience of New York’s electric grid.
Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Grid Resilience Formula Grant, the program is part of efforts to ensure grid reliability, support clean energy access, and prepare for extreme weather events as New York transitions to a zero-emission electricity system.
Administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the program is open to municipal utilities, rural cooperatives, and small electricity providers. Eligible projects include advanced grid technologies, improved conductors and cables, distributed energy resources (DER), and weatherization systems. Applicants must meet federal cost-sharing requirements and demonstrate economic, environmental, and energy benefits.
Proposals will be accepted until February 12, 2025, and $3.5 million in technical assistance is available for project development, including up to $200,000 per applicant for planning and grant writing.
The initiative builds on previous grid resilience funding, with an additional $11.5 million expected in 2025. Supported by federal and state partnerships, the funding aligns with the DOE’s $30 billion investment in grid infrastructure under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Officials emphasized the program’s role in creating jobs, enhancing grid reliability, and advancing New York’s clean energy goals, while ensuring minimal financial impact on consumers.
