A Trumbull County grand jury indicted an Akron police officer Wednesday on 11 charges related to creating and distributing child sexual abuse material – colloquially known as child pornography – according to the Trumbull County Court of Common Pleas docket. Officer Geoffrey Parker, 34, has been behind bars since Aug. 16, when agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested him at the Akron Police Department Headquarters downtown. Chief Brian Harding placed him on paid administrative leave the next day.Parker was arraigned on Aug. 21 in the Niles Municipal Court on seven felony charges before his case was sent to the Trumbull County Common Pleas Court, which is where felony cases are heard. Niles Municipal Court Judge Christopher Shaker set Parker’s bond at $1 million, citing the seriousness of his charges, the young age of the alleged victim, and his job as a police officer. Parker was arraigned in the common pleas court on Thursday morning. He pleaded not guilty — a jury trial is set for Nov. 12, with a pre-trial hearing set for Oct 8. Records show that Parker lived outside of Niles in Trumbull County with his wife and young children at the time of his arrest. He was hired by the APD in June 2020. In August, Niles City Prosecutor Philip Zuzulo told Signal Akron that the officer was involved with a group of people using the Kik application. Parker uploaded images he took of a young girl as a “quid pro quo” to receive material from other users. He said Parker sent the files on Aug. 13 and an artificial intelligence program flagged them, sending the content to a task force in Washington D.C., for a human to analyze. The case was quickly referred to the Ohio BCI, whose agents investigated and arrested him inside the Harold K. Stubbs building on Aug. 16. On Tuesday, Parker was indicted on four additional felonies by the grand jury, bringing the total felony charges to 11. Parker is accused of:Five second-degree felonies for pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor. The Ohio BCI said he shared sexually explicit videos with minors engaging in sex acts.Three second-degree felonies for illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance. The Ohio BCI said he photographed a young girl “in a state of nudity” and shared those images with others online in exchange for other images of children. Two third-degree felonies for gross sexual imposition. Parker was not initially arraigned on these charges. One second-degree felony for pandering obscenity involving a minor. Parker was not initially arraigned on this charge. Following the indictment, Parker was placed on unpaid administrative leave per the Akron Police Department’s collective bargaining agreement and department policy, a police spokesperson told Signal Akron. The post Akron police officer indicted by grand jury for creating and distributing child pornography appeared first on Signal Akron.
