CHEMUNG, N.Y. — Police are investigating human remains discovered near the Chemung River in the Town of Chemung.
Two kayakers reported the remains on Saturday, Sept. 28, prompting New York State Police to respond. Troopers found partial skeletal remains in a wooded area near the river.
While the investigation is ongoing, a State Police spokesperson said lab tests and a search of missing persons will be the first steps in the probe.
This is the second time human remains have been found in the area. In 2022, local police investigated the discovery of a human jawbone. The remains were later identified belonging to Matthew Barber, an Elmira man who had been missing since 2020.
