ITHACA, NY — Ithaca’s newest affordable housing complex, Asteri Ithaca, officially opened its doors following a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday.
Located on East Green Street, the $100 million project was funded through federal and state contributions and features 181 apartments along with an all-electric conference center. Mayor Robert Cantelmo praised the development as “transformative” during the event, while Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado emphasized the growing need for affordable housing in Ithaca and the surrounding areas.
Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted the project’s dual benefits, stating, “Asteri Ithaca is a transformative development that combines quality affordable, sustainable, and supportive apartments with a state-of-the-art conference center that will energize and elevate the entire city. It is a shining example of our commitment to investing in projects that strengthen communities and change lives.”
Senator Chuck Schumer echoed these sentiments, noting, “For too long, Ithaca has lacked both adequate affordable housing and the gathering space businesses say is critical to bolstering the region’s economic development. With the completion of this project, we are tackling both those challenges head-on.”
City officials anticipate that the new complex will attract approximately 63,000 visitors annually, providing a significant economic boost to downtown businesses.
