Sally Rapoza begins her day at home but soon calls for a ride to the grocery store. As a participant in GoGoGrandparent, a ride-hailing service tailored for seniors, Rapoza values the convenience it offers.
“I enjoy visiting family and having the freedom to get around,” Rapoza said.
GoGoGrandparent operates in nearly every county in New York, offering transportation specifically for older adults. Seniors can call the program’s phone number to be connected with a driver and receive details like the driver’s name, vehicle plate number, and expected arrival time. Rapoza appreciates that the rides are provided at no cost.
“I rely on Social Security and a modest retirement income, which is insufficient. Adding ride expenses would be challenging,” Rapoza said.
Since partnering with the state, GoGoGrandparent has arranged approximately 1,100 rides for New Yorkers. The program collaborates with services like Uber and Lyft, but offers additional benefits.
“The reason we work with GoGoGrandparent is that they train drivers to address the specific needs of older adults, ensuring they are well-prepared to assist seniors,” said Greg Olsen, director of the state Office for the Aging.
