New York Attorney General Letitia James released a report Monday examining the benefits and risks of artificial intelligence as state lawmakers prepare to draft future legislation or regulations on the emerging technology.
The Attorney General’s office spearheaded discussions on AI, including a symposium held Monday that featured input from lawmakers, academic experts, and other stakeholders.
The symposium gathered officials from the Office of the Attorney General, academics, policymakers, advocates, and industry representatives to address strategies for managing AI’s risks while promoting innovation. Key topics included misinformation, data privacy, automated decision-making, and potential applications in healthcare.
The report aims to inform state officials about AI’s implications as they develop policies over the coming months and years.
“Artificial intelligence is increasingly impacting our lives, both positively and negatively,” James said in a statement. “The symposium facilitated important discussions and plans for managing AI technology. I appreciate the contributions from all participants. As Attorney General, I am committed to ensuring that government effectively regulates AI to maximize its benefits for New Yorkers while mitigating potential harms.”
