ITHACA, N.Y. — Some like it hot. We’re happy for you. For the rest of us, it’ll be another sultry week in what has been the third warmest summer recorded at the Ithaca-Cornell weather station since it was moved out to Dryden’s Game Farm Road in the late 1960s. The next several days will be above-normal in both temperature and humidity, with pop-up showers and storms likely through much of the week and into next weekend. Due to the heat and humidity, Heat Advisories may be needed in the second half of the week.Trending warmer and more humid this week. Highest chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday. #nywx #pawx pic.twitter.com/OSQH50XMUR— NWS Binghamton (@NWSBinghamton) July 28, 2024 Your Weekly WeatherAt present, a broad area of high pressure stretches from the interior Northeast down through the Mid-Atlantic. Some fair-weather clouds are bubbling up south and east of Ithaca, and further aloft, smoke from the Western Canada wildfires is drifting across the region. However, because the air is fairly stable, the air aloft and the air near the surface aren’t really mixing. Air pollution levels are elevated from some heavier particles falling and depositing at the surface, but values remain below Advisory levels; the primary impact for the time being is a rather milky daytime sky, and some colorful sunsets. For the remainder of your Sunday, expect a fairly tranquil, sunny day. With only the faintest south wind, highs will top out in the upper 80s, with a touch of humidity but not too oppressive, as dewpoints will be in the low to mid 60s. Tonight will see increasing clouds from a retrograding (northwestward-moving) coastal low moving ashore over New England. With dry air in place, though, don’t expect any rain. Lows will be in the lower 60s.A developing storm system over the Western Great Lakes will enhance southwesterly flow Monday, and that will raise the dewpoint to muggy levels in the upper 60s. Between the low to the northwest and the coastal low, it will also be a partly to mostly cloudy day, with above average highs in the upper 80s. Monday night will stay dry as the Great Lakes system approaches, with partly cloudy skies and lows in the mid to upper 60s.The Great Lakes low moves more northward than eastward Tuesday. It’ll be a hot, partly cloudy and muggy day with highs around 90. Showers and thunderstorms look to be pretty widely scattered, and primarily to the west of Ithaca. Rainfall amounts look to be low, excepting the few locations that get smacked with a thunderstorm cell. Tuesday night will see a few showers and thunderstorms persist, with partly to mostly cloudy skies and warm, humid lows in the upper 60s.Wednesday sees the frontal boundary of the low finally work into the Finger Lakes region. It will be oppressively muggy as dewpoints enter the mid 70s; highs in the upper 80s will feel more like the mid to upper 90s, so do exercise caution if you’ll be outside for an extended period, take more breaks and stay hydrated. Expect scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening, with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Wednesday night will host a few lingering showers and storms, mostly cloudy skies, and lows in the upper 60s.While winds become more westerly to northwesterly Thursday, there’s not much in the way of relief from the heat and humidity. High pressure over the Deep South and another developer storm system over the Upper Midwest will wrap hot, moist air around the high and usher more of that juicy, stifling air into Upstate New York. It will be partly cloudy with a few isolated showers and storms. Highs will top out in the upper 80s, that will feel like the mid 90s with those tropical dewpoints in the 70s. Thursday night will be partly cloudy with a few instability showers and storms early in the evening, and lows in the upper 60s.Friday will be even more sultry as the Midwest low organizes and enhances southwesterly flow. Scattered showers and thunderstorms and partly to mostly cloudy skies are likely. Highs around 90 will feel like the upper 90s with the high dewpoint. Friday night will be a mild but humid night with a few showers early, and lows in the upper 60s.Looking into next weekend, the storm system will move through Saturday and Saturday night, and it will be warm and muggy, though some less humid air appears likely arrive by Sunday night. Highs will be in the upper 80s Saturday and mid 80s Sunday, with lows in the upper 60s Saturday night, and lower 60s Sunday night.Graphics courtesy of the NOAA Climate Prediction Center.Extended OutlookPeering into the first full week of August, the large-scale weather pattern calls for a broad ridge of hot air across the lower 48, with some weakness in the ridge over the Upper Midwest, and stronger lobes towards the coasts. The pattern is favorable to Pacific moisture entering the Desert Southwest, and Gulf of Mexico/Atlantic moisture building in across the East Coast; there’s also an elevated risk of tropical storm development during this period. Locally, the pattern is likely create warmer-than-normal temperatures and slightly above normal rainfall that will likely make it feel more humid than normal. In short, your air conditioning and box fans won’t be getting much of a break anytime soon. The post Weather: Another round of hazy, hot and humid appeared first on The Ithaca Voice.
